Consensual sex can lead to as many injuries as rape, says study

LA: Vaginal injuries are as common in voluntary sex as they are in rapes, a new study indicates. The research carried out in Denmark casts doubt on the commonly held view that vaginal injuries are evidence that intercourse has been forced.

When police officers around the world investigate rape cases, the presence of lesions inside a woman's vagina is taken as an indicator of whether she has been assaulted.

There have even been cases where men have been convicted of rape, which can carry up to a life sentence in the UK, based on vaginal injuries as the key evidence.

An in-depth study comparing rape victims with nursing students at the University of Southern Denmark reveals that vaginal injuries are just as likely to result from consensual sex as rape.

Birgitte Schmidt Astrup, a doctor and a PhD student at the university's Institute of Forensic Medicine, told ScienceNordic: 'The findings are extremely interesting.

'The nursing students experience just as frequent vaginal injuries as rape victims, and so these injuries cannot be used for much more than to establish that intercourse has taken place.'

She added that in cases of convictions based on evidence of vaginal injuries, there could now be discussions as to whether there have been miscarriages of justice.

The study looked at 110 nursing students in their early 20s and 39 rape victims from Centre for Rape Victims at Odense University Hospital, all who whom were examined less than 28 hours after sexual inercourse.

Results showed that vaginal injuries were found in 36 per cent of rape victims and in 34 per cent of the nursing students.

The nursing students' results were not affected by whether they had engaged in rough or gentle sex, or whether they had used condoms or sex toys.

The rape victims were more difficult to study in the same way, because they rarely remembered the details of the attacks and because they usually didn't keep track of the duration of the assault.

Dr Astrup's findings, published in the journal Forensic Science International, have already had an effect on the investigations by the Danish police.

'Before I came up with some of these figures, the investigators were inclined to be take the case seriously when there were injuries and less seriously when there were no injuries,' she told ScienceNordic.

However, she added that while the figures for injuries remained roughly the same for consensual sex as rape there could be an increased risk of sustaining multiple injuries during forced intercourse.

Rape victims' injuries may also be more severe.

The kinds of mucous membranes different women have in their vaginas may also have an effect on the injuries they sustain from rough sex.

For example, U.S. researchers have shown that white women sustain up to five times as many vaginal injuries as women from other races.

Psychologists who studied 120 male students aged 18 to 21 discovered most thought choosing to wear red meant a woman had ‘greater sexual intent’ and was more likely to jump into bed with a man than someone who opted for more neutral colours, such as green, blue or white.

And the item in question does not need to be a revealing top, or a sexy short skirt, researchers found.

Volunteers were asked to judge a woman’s sexual intent based only on the colour of an ordinary tee-shirt.

The findings, published in the latest Journal of Social Psychology, confirm the powerful influence that the colour of clothing can have on how men perceive a member of the opposite sex.

Previous studies have shown that men will ask more intimate questions of a woman and sit closer to her if she is wearing a red rather than green blouse.

Other research suggests female hitch hikers who choose a red top get more lifts from male drivers but not from female ones.

To establish exactly how red affects a man’s perception of a woman, psychologists at the University of South Brittany in France enlisted 120 male undergraduates and split them into four groups.

Each volunteer spent 30 seconds looking at an image of the same 20-year-old woman but with the colour of her top altered for each group to red, blue, green or white.

The students then completed a questionnaire which asked them to rate, on a scale of one to nine, how attractive they thought the woman was.

They also had to rate her in terms of how likely they thought it was that she would have sex with a man on the first date.

The woman was judged to be most attractive when she was wearing the red top, followed by white, blue and finally green.

She was also judged, by some considerable margin, to be most likely to agree to sex when she wore red, followed by blue, green and finally white.

In a report on their findings, the researchers said the results supported their hypothesis that men see red as an invitation for sex.

‘Studies have shown that red is connected to lust and romantic love as well as to female fertility.

‘But biological evolution could also explain the importance of redness. During their fertility phase, the perineum of female baboons, macaques and chimpanzees becomes red, probably to attract males.

‘For the first time, our experiment shows clothes have the ability to lead men to perceive a woman wearing a red tee-shirt as having greater sexual intent than one wearing blue, white, or green.’

Psychologist Dr Glenn Wilson, visiting professor of psychology at Gresham College in London, said research also shows men wearing red are more attractive to women because they are seen as having higher status.

‘But women in red are attractive to men because of its passionate associations. These effects operate unconsciously and probably derive from the fact that red is a significant colour in nature, signalling danger and causing excitement.’

Forget Viagra, Cuddle drug could be the new way to boost man's libido

Taking a chemical that helps mothers bond with their babies may not immediately strike you as the best way to improve a man’s libido.

But oxytocin, the so-called ‘cuddle hormone’, can dramatically improve male sexual performance, researchers have found – producing results on a par with Viagra.

One of the scientists behind the discovery and development of Viagra was so impressed that he described an oxytocin-based treatment as having ‘blockbuster potential’.

Oxytocin is a hormone naturally made in the body in both men and women, and is involved in sex, sexual attraction, trust and confidence.

Extra doses of the ‘cuddle chemical’ are released into a mother’s blood during labour – triggering the production of breast milk – and flood the brain during breastfeeding, helping mother and baby bond.

It has recently been shown to make men more sensitive and in tune with others’ feelings, but its effects on the male physique were unknown until now.

Researchers in California published a paper on the hormone’s effects after giving it to a married father of three who suffered from attention deficit disorder and had difficulty in maintaining social relationships.

His relationship with his wife was also in difficulties, and conventional drugs either were not suitable or had unwanted side-effects.

Spraying the hormone up his nose twice a day did little to help his social phobia but did wonders for his love life, the Journal of Sexual Medicine reports.

His libido went from ‘very weak’ to ‘somewhat strong’, his sexual arousal from ‘somewhat difficult’ to ‘somewhat easy’ and the act itself was easier to perform and more satisfying.

The spray also produced emotional benefits. The man said he found it easier to be affectionate towards his wife, while she said he wanted to be closer to her and was more tactile. But not all its effects may be quite so welcome.

According to the Daily Mail, The man, who is identified only as Mr B, also hugged a work colleague in a ‘very out of character’ way. At the time the paper was written, the man had not experienced any other side-effects, despite using the oxytocin spray twice a day for several months.

However, the positive effects vanished if he stopped using the spray.

The University of California researchers said the improvements were ‘in keeping’ with those of Viagra.

They concluded: ‘These findings support trials directly examining the use of oxytocin to treat problems in this vital aspect of human function, especially in the context of stable, loving relationships.’

Others said that as Viagra does not work in all cases, there is a great medical need for a new drug.

Mike Wyllie, one of the team of scientists that discovered and developed Viagra for pharmaceutical giant Pfizer, said that for some men who have had surgery, the little blue pills can work in as few as 10 per cent of cases.

With sales of Viagra and similar pills reaching almost £2.5billion year worldwide, there are billions to be made.

Dr Wyllie said that a drug based on oxytocin could have ‘blockbuster potential’.

However, he warned that drug watchdogs may be cautious about approving a medicine that has emotional as well as physical effects.

How alcoholic drink can sharpen up your mind

London: It is the perfect excuse to pour yourself another one – alcohol can sharpen the mind. A study has found that men who enjoy a relaxing drink are actually better at solving brain teasers than those who are stone cold sober.

Not only did the thirstier chaps get more questions right, they were also quicker in delivering the correct responses.

It is thought that alcohol hinders analytical thinking, allowing creative thoughts that otherwise might be stifled to take root.

This makes it easier to find imaginative solutions to problems.

According to the Daily Mail report, the amount of alcohol found to spark creative thought was around four units – the equivalent of two pints of beer or two medium glasses of wine. The finding was made by University of Illinois psychologists who set 40 healthy young men a series of brain teasers.

These involved being given three words, such as coin, quick and spoon, and coming up with a fourth word that links all three (in this case the word being silver).

Half drank the equivalent of two pints of beer before doing the tests, the rest carried them out sober.

The drinking group solved nearly 40 per cent more problems than the others and took an average of 12 seconds per question, compared to the 15.5 seconds needed by the sober subjects.

Writing in the journal Consciousness and Cognition, researchers said: ‘The current research represents the first demonstration of alcohol’s effect on creative problem solving.’

Co-author Jennifer Wiley added: ‘We tested what happens when people are slightly merry – not when people drink to extremes.

‘The bottom line is that we think being too focused can blind you to novel possibilities, and a broader, more flexible state of attention is needed for creative solutions to emerge.’

University of Hertfordshire psychologist Professor Richard Wiseman said: ‘It is an interesting idea and does make sense.’

But he added that a good night’s sleep is likely to be just as beneficial

Yes, it does exist, US gynaecologist says he has found the G-spot, but it's very small

No wonder it’s notoriously difficult to find. A doctor claims to have proved the G-spot really does exist – but says it measures a meagre 8.1mm by 3.6mm by 1.5mm.

The American gynaecologist discovered the elusive erogenous zone during a post-mortem examination.

The tiny piece of tissue, said to be rich in nerve endings, has caused fascination and frustration in equal measure since its existence was first mooted more than 60 years ago.

Many scientists and doctors have doubted it is real, while magazines have promoted it as the holy grail of female sexual pleasure.

Two years ago, a large-scale British study concluded that the G-spot was a figment of women’s imagination, encouraged by magazines and sex therapists.

But the new study, published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, claims it does exist after all – and its location, on the front wall of the vagina, is roughly where sex experts have long said it to be.

Gynaecologist Adam Ostrzenski made the discovery during an examination of an elderly Polish woman who had died from a head injury.

Dr Oztrenski, of the Institute of Psychology in St Petersburg, Florida, said: ‘This study confirmed the anatomic existence of the G-spot, which may lead to a better understanding and improvement of female sexual function.’

He plans to undertake further dissections next month, and will carry out tests on hormones, chemicals and nerve endings to investigate whether the functioning of the G-spot varies with age.

Irwin Goldstein, the journal’s editor-in-chief, said that while the evidence came from only one woman, it ‘adds to the growing body of literature regarding women’s sexual anatomy and physiology’.

Paula Hall, a sex psychotherapist with Relate, said: ‘If you have difficulties with your sex life, then a greater biological understanding might be helpful but for some people it will create more anxiety.’

Two years ago, researchers at King’s College London concluded that the G-spot was no more than a fantasy.

In the study, hundreds of pairs of female twins filled in questionnaires. If the erogenous zone did exist, it would be expected that both of each set of identical twins would report having one.

This was not the case. In fact identical twins were no more likely to share a G-spot than non-identical twins.

But Beverly Whipple, the researcher who coined the term G-spot, dismissed the study as flawed. ‘The biggest problem with the findings is that twins don’t generally have the same sexual partner,’ she said.

To what extent the ubiquity of sex and pornography in the public domain has influenced our perception of sexiness is a subject that filmmakers, Jill Bauer and Ronna Gradus, explore in their new film, Sexy Baby: A Documentary About Sexiness and The Cyber Age.

A journalist and a photographer, the two women were compelled to make the movie after Ms Gradus had witnessed an awkward scene take place between college kids in a Coconut Grove, Florida club.

She explained to Huffington Post: 'Girls were dancing on [poles], and their classmates and other guys were putting tips in their shorts. It was total stripper behavior.'

But something didn't sit right with her and when she showed photographs she had taken of the action to her colleague, Ms Gradus, the journalist recognised the incongruity.

'I noticed in one particular picture [that] the girls were really trying hard, dancing and writhing on the pole and doing all sorts of stuff to get the guys' attention, and the guys were a little bit checked out,' Bauer said. 'It wasn’t as titillating as it should have been, and that really intrigued me.'

This revelation, that such erotic behaviour had become so banal, formed the basis of their research into how the saturation of sex in the public sphere, thanks to social networking and the internet in general, has changed the way women and younger generations feel about it.

The documentary explores these themes as it follows the lives of three protagonists of what Ms Gradus and Ms Bauer refer to as Generation XXX.

Laura is a 22-year-old teacher from North Carolina who is seeking labiaplasty, Nichole is a 32-year-old former porn star from Florida and Winnie is a 12-year-old school girl from Manhattan.

While they all inhabit a world in which 'privates are public and extreme is the new norm,' their reactions to it are markedly different.

Laura, a sweet and seemingly impressionable young woman, explains why she chose to have an operation to reduce the size of her labia in a clip of the feature movie that just premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival.

'I just figure, it would be huge turn on to a guy to look like a porn star,' she says.

Ms Bauer recalled how she and Ms Gradus followed Laura as she partied with her friends, hoping to get a better sense of how she related to her body: 'There was an amateur night at the club, and I guess every couple of weeks they give away a boob job. Laura and her friends were all sitting around saying, "That’s so cool."'

Ms Gradus added: 'There is not a lot of questioning that happens. Big boobs are the thing, being sexy is the thing, looking maybe a little more like a porn star is the thing, and she didn’t really question it. It was just sort of like, "I want to fit in and feel sexy."'

On the other end of the spectrum is Winnifred, a savvy 12-year-old from New York who accepts that the Facebook and pop culture encourages an 'anything goes' attitude, but when it comes to porn, is not that interested and has yet to really watch any.

'Your Facebook profile is not necessarily who your are, it's more like who you want to be,' she explains to the camera. 'We make ourselves seem like... down to f***. We make ourselves seems like we're up for anything. And in a way all of this internet stuff kind of traps you. You've started an alter ego that has to be maintained and has to be real in a way.

'So yeah, I mean it does kind of shape how you end up and how you actually are in real life.'

But she confesses: 'I guess I'm the kind of person who doesn't have the guts and doesn't really care enough to look at porn. I know what sex is, I don't need to see it in front of me played out.'

For her part, Nichole, who is trying to break out of the industry, sees 'porn sex as sport f***ing' and blames the way the mainstream has been 'completely infiltrated' by adult entertainment on the digital age.

Oral sex can increase risk of cancer

Washington: A casual attitude towards oral sex can increase the risk of oral cancer!

There is growing evidence to support that a dramatic rise in throat and mouth cancers in young adults has resulted from certain strains of a virus - the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) – which is transmitted by oral sex.

US scientists said Sunday there is strong evidence linking oral sex to cancer, and urged more study of how human papillomaviruses may be to blame for a rise in oral cancer among white men.

In the United States, oral cancer due to HPV infection is now more common than oral cancer from tobacco use, which remains the leading cause of such cancers in the rest of the world.

Researchers have found a 225-percent increase in oral cancer cases in the United States from 1974 to 2007, mainly among white men, said Maura Gillison of Ohio State University.

"When you compare people who have an oral infection or not... the single greatest factor is the number of partners on whom the person has performed oral sex," said Gillison, who has been researching HPV and cancer for 15 years.

"When the number of partners increases, the risk increases," she told reporters at the American Association for the Advancement of Science meeting in Washington.

Previous studies have suggested that people who have performed oral sex on six or more partners over a lifetime face an eight-fold higher risk of acquiring HPV-related head or neck cancer than those with fewer than six partners, she said.

But even though the link between HPV and cervical cancer has been well known for many years, and vaccines now exist to provide some protection, much study remains to be done to confirm observational links and establish causes, Gillison said.

"The cervical cancer field is 20 years ahead," she said.

"We can't demonstrate definitively that certain behaviors are associated with risk of acquiring an infection," she said.

"The rise in oral cancer in the US is predominantly among young white males and we do not know the answer as to why."

Researcher Diane Harper of the University of Missouri said such studies will take time, but the oral cancer field may move more quickly by using technology already developed for detecting HPV in cervical cancer patients.

"One of the scientific technologies that have evolved over time is the way that we detect HPV," said Harper.

"I think that the head and neck cancer area will benefit from that because we have gone through all kinds of different laboratory techniques to make sure we are actually finding what we think are HPV and getting type-specific information to go with that."

There as many as 150 different types of human papillomaviruses, and about 40 of those can be sexually transmitted, according to the National Cancer Institute.

Some may cause genital warts, while other more high-risk varieties can cause oral, anal, vaginal and penile cancers.

Sexually transmitted HPV infections are common and often asymptomatic, and untreated cases in women are the main cause of cervical cancer.

Half of all sexually active Americans will get HPV at some point in their lives, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has estimated.

Two vaccines, Gardasil and Cervarix, were approved by the US Food and Drug Administration in 2006 for HPV types that cause cervical cancer and genital warts.

However, only 40 percent of US girls have received one dose and just 17 percent have received all three doses in the regimen, said researchers.

A study published earlier this month in the New England Journal of Medicine found that the HPV vaccine could prevent 90 percent of genital warts in men, and the vaccine has also been approved against anal cancer in men and women.

Harper said she was not recommending the general population get the HPV vaccine because research has not yet established its effectiveness past five to eight years for cervical cancer.

"We know from all of the very good modeling studies that have been done throughout the world that if the vaccine does not last for a minimum of 15 years, cervical cancer will not be prevented, it will only be postponed," she said.

For now, Harper and fellow presenter Bonnie Halpern-Felsher of the University of California San Francisco recommended that patients discuss HPV with their doctors.

"If you talk to health care providers and certainly parents and other educators, they are not talking to teens about oral sex, period," said Halpern-Felsher, who has studied teenagers' attitudes and sexual behaviors.

"Teens really have no idea that oral sex is related to any outcome like STIs (sexually transmitted infections), HPV, chlamydia, and so on."

Sayangnya, benjolan kanker kadang-kadang baru teraba ketika ukurannya sudah lebih dari 1 cm yang artinya sudah memasuki stadium 1. Peluang kesembuhannya tentu masih lebih tinggi dibandingkan jika sudah stadium lanjut, namun tetap saja jaringan kankernya harus dioperasi.
